HCBA PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

The turn of a New Year is a time of reflection on the past year and resolution for the year to come. I am honored to serve as the 2008 President of the Hamilton County Bar Association. My fellow board members and I look forward to a productive year to come as we build upon the accomplishments of the past year. Under President Bob Becker and the Board, the HCBA accomplished the following goals set for 2007:

 * Brought back the golf outing as the 2007 Judges and Lawyers Golf tournament where over 45 golfers enjoyed a day of competitive camaraderie.

 * Re-established, increased or further developed the following HCBA committees:  social committee, nominating committee, judicial advisory committee, and CLE committee.

 * Completed the work on the bar association web site and photo composite of HCBA membership.

I'm sure there were many other accomplishments that I have failed to notice, but rest assured the new Board will do what it can to keep the Hamilton County Bar Association a useful, yet fun, Association.

In conclusion, I invite your active participation in the HCBA. As one of the fastest growing counties in the state, our legal community is growing rapidly. The purpose of membership is to provide you with opportunities for legal educational growth as well as professional and social networking. Your presence at one or all of our many events is encouraged and your thoughts and ideas in regard to how to make your membership and our organization more valuable are welcome.

Best wishes for a healthy and prosperous new year!

CLE COMMITTEE

The Executive Board is excited to begin presenting CLE seminars for the membership.  If you are interested in serving as Chair or interested in being a part of the CLE committee, presenting CLE seminars, or have any input on topics you wish to see presented, please contact Jim Crum.

HCBA DONATION TO ISBA

Doug Church is excited to announce that the HCBA was the first county bar association to donate original artwork to the Indiana State Bar Association’s new project aimed at acquiring paintings of each of Indiana’s 92 county courthouses.

The painting by Rich Ernsting is displayed prominently at the ISBA offices in Indianapolis.  Since the HCBA made its donation, 10 other counties have followed and the collection of artwork is growing!  Thank you!

“LAWYERS HELPING FAMILIES”

“Lawyers Helping Families” is a Hamilton County project for indigent parties in family law cases.  The project meets on the third Wednesday of each month at 4:30 p.m. in the Jury Assembly room, Suite 313.  Hearings are scheduled in Superior Court 3 at 5:30 p.m. and clients utilize attorney volunteers who enter Limited Appearances for that evening’s hearing only.

Attorneys are encouraged to refer potential Hamilton County clients to the program, including those cases where income disparity between parties is an issue, in cases where Hamilton County residents are proceeding pro se in family law cases, and income eligible clients with uncontested family law matters.

Clients may be referred to Heartland’s Intake Line at 317-614-5304.  For more information or to volunteer, please contact Laurie Beltz Boyd at 317-631-9410 x 2267 or laurie.boyd@ilsi.net.

The annual HCBA Holiday Luncheon was held December 13, 2007 at Harbour Trees Golf Club.  Members enjoyed good food and camaraderie.
